The alert had been due to end at 11 on Saturday morning but is now in place until 11 on Sunday morning.

The warning for ice and snow across the province affects County Antrim, County Armagh, County Down, County Londonderry, County Tyrone & County Fermanagh.

John Wylie from the Met Office told Downtown Cool FM, the extreme weather is causing problems across province:

"Wintry conditions persist in Northern Ireland and Met Office warnings of ice with a risk of further snow continue to be in place, right the way through until Sunday morning.

"The band of snow which has been creating some local problems in the east of Northern Ireland during Saturday morning should weaken further and move away as we go through the afternoon," he said.

But he insisted the wintry weather will ease eventually with a thaw on the way:

"Side roads in particular remain snow covered with ice so... the message is leave a little bit of extra time for your journey and take extra care if you're out and about during the course of the afternoon.

"Over the next few days though, temperatures should begin to rise and a slow thaw set in in most places," he added.

There has been widespread disruption on Saturday with heavy snow drifts on some roads and a number of sporting fixtures called off.

Glenavon v Loughgall is the only Irish Cup game to go ahead on Saturday afternoon.

The pitch at Mourneview Park was deemed playable after a second pitch inspection.
