Heavy persistent rain is expected to affect parts of Northern Ireland today, which may lead to some travel disruption and flooding according to the Met Office.

Forecasters have issued a yellow severe weather warning for counties Antrim, Down, Tyrone, Derry~Londonderry and Armagh through this afternoon.

"Rain currently affecting Northern Ireland will persist for several more hours before slowly clearing eastwards later this afternoon. Some of this rain will be heavy and in some places as much as 20 to 30 mm rain may build up."

The Met Office's weather warning comes into effect from 10:00 on Sunday lasting through until 17:00.

"There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water leading to longer journey times by car and bus"

NORTHERN IRELAND FOUR DAY FORECAST

Tonight:

Showers or some longer outbreaks of rain, occasionally heavy, but turning drier overnight. The westerly winds will be fresh to strong at times with gales around the coast. Minimum temperature 7 °C.

Monday:

It will be a mainly dry and bright start. However, cloud soon thickening with rain pushing east through the afternoon. Mild and breezy. Maximum temperature 13 °C.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:

Cloudy with patchy rain and drizzle on Tuesday, windy and mild. Rain, heavy at times on Wednesday, then turning colder with showers on Thursday. Remaining windy with gales possible.
