Northern Ireland has been warned to brace itself for gales of up to 65- 75mph overnight as a yellow weather warning is issued as a result of Storm Ellen.

Whilst the strongest of the winds looks likely to affect parts of the south coast of Ireland, some very strong gusts are expected across Northern Ireland.

Cork County Council has warned people camping or staying in caravans to seek alternative accommodation indoors where a status red wind warning is in effect.

The Met Office says strong winds “are expected to cause disruption to travel and power supplies on Thursday” as Storm Ellen arrives.

"Strong southerly winds are expected to develop across Northern Ireland in association with Storm Ellen early on Thursday. Whilst some uncertainty still exists in the exact track of the strongest winds, there is potential for wind gusts inland of 65 mph, and around coasts and over higher ground of 75 mph. Winds are expected to temporarily ease through mid-morning."

"Road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible. Some roads and bridges may close. Fallen trees may be an additional hazard. There is a chance that power cuts may occur."

A yellow Met office weather warning has been issued for a spell of potentially very wet and windy weather affecting Northern Ireland on Thursday morning

The warning comes into effect from midnight and is valid until 8am Thursday.
