Storm Babet is on the way this week

Storm Babet is expected to bring will heavy rain to parts of Northern Ireland from early Wednesday into Thursday.

The heaviest rainfall is most likely across the high ground of Antrim and Down, locally in excess of 100 mm of rain is possible.

The rain will be accompanied some very strong and gusty southeasterly winds at times, which could exacerbate impacts.

A yellow weather warning has been issued across Northern Ireland between 6am on Wednesday 18th October and noon on Thursday 19th October.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Steven Keates said: “Storm Babet will bring impactful rain to many parts of the UK, but especially parts of eastern Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England later this week.

"Heavy and persistent rain will fall onto already saturated ground bringing a risk of flooding. It is important to stay up to date with warnings from your local flood warning agency as well as the local authorities.

“As well as heavy rain, Storm Babet will bring some very strong winds and large waves near some eastern coasts too. Gusts in excess of 60mph are possible in eastern and northern Scotland from Thursday. It is likely Met Office warnings will be updated through the week.”

Today: A dry day for much of the area with brighter spells increasing into the afternoon. Cloudier around the east coast with drizzly showers possible. Winds light from east to southeast. Maximum temperature 13 °C.

Tonight: Dry with clear spells with a frost developing for some western rural parts. Winds east to southeast occasionally fresh across the east coasts. Minimum temperature 0 °C.

Tuesday: Cloud thickening and lowering from the south through the day to bring periods of rain for the early and night, which turns heavy at times, as strong southeast winds develop. Maximum temperature 13 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday: Unsettled with periods of rain feeding from the south, turning heavier at times, particularly on Thursday and Friday.
