Roy Hodgson became Euro 16's highest-profile manager to resign - minutes after his England side bowed out of the competition.

The 68-year-old stepped down after 2-1 defeat to lowly Iceland - one of England's worst results in recent times.

The search is now on for a successor with under-21 boss Gareth Southgate the front-runner.

It was a hugely disappointing performance by England with their opponents outplaying them in every department.

Wayne Rooney got them off to a great start after just ove a minute when he converted a penalty.

But, in truth, they never really looked like adding to their tally with every player well below par.

Iceland, by contrast, played brilliantly and got their just rewards with a win that puts them into the quarter-finals where they will play the host nation.
