Larne go top with Newry win as Glens thump Carrick to take second spot

There were wins for Larne and Glentoran on Friday night in the Danske Bank Premiership as they kept their challenge at the top end of the table on track.

Larne went top with a 2-0 win over Newry City. Leroy Millar and Mark Randall netted in the second half for Tiernan Lynch's side.

Glentoran sit just a point behind with a match in hand however. They beat Carrick Rangers 5-0.

Aidan Wilson, Jay Donnelly, Shay McCartan and Conor McMenamin had the Oval side four-up at the break, with Patrick McClean heading a fifth in the second half.

Cliftonville and Crusaders ended scoreless.

In Saturday afternoon's games, Linfield were held to a scoreless draw at Coleraine's Showgrounds.

There was a resounding win however for Glenavon as they beat Dungannon Swifts 5-0. Conor McCloskey opened the scoring. Four goals in the space of 17 minutes then killed it off as a contest.

Eoin Bradley's goal was followed by a spectacular third from Isaac Baird. Matthew Fitzpatrick then scored from close range.

Aaron Prendergast's powerful finish ended the scoring.

Ballymena United's run of five defeats in succession is at an end. David McDaid popped up with a double as they beat Portadown 2-0 - the result putting more pressure on the Shamrock Park side.

They are now nine league games without a victory.
