As speculation grows about Michael O’Neill’s Northern Ireland future, players past and present have been urging him to stay put.

O’Neill has so far refused to be drawn on his plans and after the game in Basel urged the team to stay together.

He said: “I am not even giving it any thought.”

O’Neill had earlier been linked with a host of domestic clubs but both the USA and Scotland are also rumoured to be seeking his signature after an extraordinary run of successes.

Captain, Steven Davis said he hopes he will stay even though he is certain he will be courted by a number of clubs.

“He has been integral to the success we have had over the last few years – it is natural other clubs and nations are probably going to be interested in him because of that but from a selfish points of view obviously we want to keep him,” he said.

“He is so important to us – we would love him to stay.”

Former striker, Iain Dowie “People talk about Scotland – but I don’t see that – I know he lives there but does he want to live in that cauldron.

“But there will come a time when there will be a knock on the IFA door and someone will want Michael. That will be a decision

“I suggest he might want a club’s job – the job he’s done he rightly deserves to get one.
