Larne striker Thomas Stewart has been spelling out the club’s ambitions ahead of one of the biggest games in their history.

The 31-year-old Portadown-born marksman fired his team into the semi-finals of the Irish Cup after bagging the winner against Ballymena in the quarters.

Guesting on our latest Cool FM BetMcLean Facebook Football Show – a Cup special (see link below) – Stewart said they meant “business”

“The club were on their knees at the very start of the year then they went on a terrible run of 15 games unbeaten and they had a chance of making the Top Six,” he said.

“I think we are definitely ahead of ourselves but give the guys a bit of hope going into the cup game Obviously, with the new players coming in we have done well and I think we have still overachieved but we will give it a good go on Saturday.

“It was great, it was good feeling for me but a great feeling for the whole team because we do mean business.”

Stewart has had a long career in professional football – starting with Wolves before notable spells with Linfield, Derry City, Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk.

He has also played in the US, most recently with Sacramento Republic.

Joining Larne this season has the potential to be one of his best-ever moves.

“It meant a lot for the team and for the fans as well because I believe at the start of the year there were only 40 fans turning up and now there are over 1.000 turning up through the gates and that is a massive turnaround,” he added.

“There is a lot of hope there for the team and going forward it’s going to be great.”

Stewart is joined by Stevie Garrett from Cliftonville who face Championship side Loughgall in the other semi.
