The Republic have clinched third spot in their World Cup qualifying group after rounding off their campaign with a 3-0 win over Luxembourg.

While qualification was out of their reach going into last night's game at the Aviva, Stephen Kenny's side were determined to end their run in style.

Shane Duffy celebrates scoring for the Republic

Goals from Shane Duffy, Chiedozie Ogbene and Callum Robinson gave them all three points.

After the game, Kenny said: "We certainly didn't want to finish fourth.

"We're not celebrating finishing third by any means but I think people understand there was a radical overhaul of the squad that was absolutely necessary.

"For us to go forward and be brilliant, we needed to make radical changes."

Kenny said they were putting themselves in place to have a strong Nations League campaign - and "leading on from that a really strong campaign to qualify for the European championship."
