Global social media platforms Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram and Whatsapp have all crashed this afternoon.

The online services all share an infrastructure and are owned by Facebook, which is owned by American billionaire Mark Zuckerberg.

Users have been left unable to refresh or update any pages, and it seems to be a worldwide situation.

According to the website Downdetector, the crash started around 4:45pm UK time.

So far, there has been no comment from the team at Facebook on the issue.
