The first flight between Birmingham to the City of Derry Airport has touched down to a warm Easter welcome.
Ryanair is now operating a twice weekly service from the North West base from today
Passengers were greeted by the Eater bunny, cupcakes, balloons, and Prosecco in the arrivals haul to celebrate the inaugural flight.
Jade Kirwan, Head of Communications at Ryanair visited the airport to mark the occasion.
She said: “There is great excitement on the ground with the new service operating twice per week.
“Two return services over and back running on both Wednesday’s and Saturday’s.
“That is building on our existing service to Manchester which we operate four times per week.
“So, building UK connectivity offering more choice over and back to the UK.”
During her visit Ms Kirwan was asked about the future of the route but gave no assurances that it is here to stay.
She said: “We look at so many factors, a couple include cost certainty – making sure we can operate at favourable costs so that we can deliver that value back for our customers.
“Route viability as well. So, will the route be successful or not? Will customers want to fly it? But equally is our aircraft position in the right place to facility those routes as well.
“I suppose we have seen the demand. Manchester has performed very well. I think we have had it operating since Winter 2021. It is proven itself to be a valuable route and then Birmingham has been long requested in the community.
“Again, we see great viability in it, so we are excited to get it up and running and see how it goes.
“We will see how it see how it is filling up and see how it is performing and then we review our routes again.
“So, if there is potential to carry it forward that will be determined by that.”
