An 11-year-old girl is fighting for her life in hospital following a collision with a bin lorry in the Borders.

Emergency services raced to the scene on the A6105 just east of Gordon, Berwickshire, after the alarm was raised shortly after 8am this morning (Wednesday).

It happened near a junction with an unclassified local road, as children were making their way to school.

The youngster was airlifted to the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People in Edinburgh, where medical staff described her condition as "critical".

Scottish Borders Council has confirmed one of its vehicles was involved, and pupils at local schools who are friends with the girl are being offered extra support.
