Three people have been rescued off Spittal beach, after the inflatable dinghy they were in was blown out to sea.

According to the RNLI, it had been tethered to the shore when it was caught by the wind and broke free.

Berwick's inshore lifeboat was scrambled to the scene after the alarm was raised around 3.20pm this afternoon (Monday), and the crew intercepted the dinghy around half a mile away.

The three people on board were returned to the shore and handed into the care of Berwick Coastguard rescue team.

Meanwhile, there have been increasing reports of dead birds being found on Spittal Beach, following recent cases of bird flu.

Berwick East councillor Georgina Hill says she's raised this issue with the local service team at Northumberland County Council.

A spokesperson said: “We collected approximately 30 last week the guys are going back today as more have come in with the tides, we will be monitoring the tides and attending daily to address any new carcasses.”
