Meet Greatest Hits Radio Scotland's Fred MacAulay

He's here with the Top 10 @ 10 and the Greatest Hits for a Sunday.....

Author: Jordan Ingram

Fred MacAulay takes over your Sunday mornings on Greatest Hits Radio across Scotland. He's got the Top 10 @ 10 and the biggest songs of the 70s, 80s & 90s. Fred's no stranger to the Scottish airwaves and is best known for his comedy tours and appearances on comedy TV shows like Have I Got News For You, Mock the Week and QI.

Make sure you're involved in the show! Call Fred on 0333 20 20 401 or Text 'Show' and your message to 61054.

What can we expect from your show on Greatest Hits?

My Sunday show begins with The Top Ten At Ten. Then, I like to bring a bit of ‘Fred’s Life” into the programme…a mixture of live gigs, reminiscing, dreadful name-drops and a dollop of humour about the state of affairs at home and abroad. Plus, we generally have a guest from the world of stand-up comedy, young and old alike.

What’s your favourite thing about presenting your radio show?

It’s three hours long – but it zips by. It’s honestly never felt anything like three hours. For me though, the best thing has been the sheer number of people who tell me they enjoy listening in.

How different is presenting on radio compared to TV?

It’s much easier to be yourself on radio. I’m on air for three hours a week. The daily programmes are on for maybe 20! It’d be unusual to find someone on tv for more than an hour (in entertainment)(the News guys do more of course). In TV you’re at the end of a very long production process often with dozens of other people having done their bit (lights, set, sound etc).

As well as presenting on Greatest Hits Radio, what are you up to now?

I’m loving my stand-up gigs just now. Touring venues around Scotland, Fringe shows in Edinburgh during August and a lot of after dinner events in the diary.

What's your go-to driving song?

Nothing specific to report here, although my car sometimes decides to put my iPhone tunes on for no apparent reason and that always starts with Amy Macdonald….which is just fine with me.

Which song is your Good Times anthem?

I’ve always enjoyed Jessica by The Allman Brothers……even though it’s been commandeered by a certain tv show that I never watch.

Where do you go for the Good Times?

I’m afraid it’ll stay a hidden gem. There’s no place like home and my favourite place in the world is my garden...speaking of which, I’ve got weeds to attend to...

Simon said of his Drivetime show: "I think the thing about Drivetime is that it is like the flip side of breakfast. You kind of know what an awful lot of people are doing, it's the end of most people's day, they're doing some final bits of work, they're shutting the laptop, they're doing a bit of food preparation, they're driving home. I think it is that sense of camaraderie, it's the end of the day, people want to be cheered up and they want to spend some time with some decent folk on the radio!"
