TV presenter James May joined Simon Mayo on his Drivetime Show to chat about The Grand Tour season five's A Scandi Flick. The first episode of the new series follows their journey and adventure through Scandinavia, which included James crashing his car. While on Greatest Hits Radio, James explained to Simon how it all came about.

James has appeared on The Grand Tour since it began in 2016, alongside Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond. The Prime Video show is now in its fifth season and follows them as they travel the world, putting different cars through various challenges.

The new episode saw James damage a car and crack his ribs in an accident while on the Arctic Circle trip and he got into what happened in his conversation with Simon.

Watch James May explain how his crash on The Grand Tour happened:

Describing a tunnel they chose to drive down, James told Simon: "One of the competitions we organised was driving down a tunnel in a disused submarine base, so a service tunnel and it comes to a very abrupt halt at the end."

Explaining what happened when the three of them took turns driving their rally cars down the tunnel, he added: "It was a stupid idea actually now that I think about it. You had to go as fast as you could but still stop before the end. And two of them did, and I didn't."

He revealed that the problem was that he was trying so hard to win, saying: "I was trying to win. Which I don't really do normally because I don't really care, but I suddenly thought 'right I'll show them'."

In the rest of the interview, James got chatting more to Simon about filming The Grand Tour, as well as birthdays, Sunday drives and The Beatles.

Simon said of his Drivetime show: "I think the thing about Drivetime is that it is like the flip side of breakfast. You kind of know what an awful lot of people are doing, it's the end of most people's day, they're doing some final bits of work, they're shutting the laptop, they're doing a bit of food preparation, they're driving home. I think it is that sense of camaraderie, it's the end of the day, people want to be cheered up and they want to spend some time with some decent folk on the radio!"
