It's been a long time coming, but finally Top Gun 2 has started filming if Tom Cruise's latest tweet is to be believed! It was just over a year ago when Tom Cruise first confirmed the news that all Top Gun fans had been waiting for, telling an Australian TV show, "Yes, it's true".

And now the film star has posted a photo to Twitter with the caption, '#Day1'. The photo shows Tom Cruise as Maverick facing away from the camera and looking towards a fighter jet, holding a helmet with his name on it. The actor also tagged film producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Skydance, the film studio behind the production.

We're so excited!

Rumours of the sequel started back in 2016 after the film's producer Jerry Bruckheimer tweeted a photo of himself with Tom saying, 'Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend @TomCruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2.' And now it is definitely happening, over three decades after the original film's release.

The sequel is thought to be called Top Gun: Maverick and will see Tom Cruise reprise his role of LT Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell from the original 1986 film. Watch the trailer for Top Gun below.

Although not confirmed, earlier this year movieweb.com revealed that Top Gun 2 would be officially known as Top Gun: Maverick with a release date of 12th July 2019.

Not a huge amount is known about the new film but most rumours surrounding the plot say it will be in the US back in the Navy fighters weapons school, nicknamed 'Top Gun'. Maverick will now have progressed through the ranks and be at a higher level than he was in the original film. There are also rumours that Val Kilmer has expressed an interest in returning as Ice Man in the film.

Now take a look at the biggest films from 2017.

20. The Lost City Of Z

2013's The Immigrant is sadly still waiting for a UK release, so praise be to the cinematic gods that James Gray's The Lost City Of Z arrived without delay. Based on the true-life tale of British explorer Percy Fawcett (Charlie Hunnam), this dense but always gripping biopic is part political drama, part family drama and part adventure.
On discovering the remnants of an indigenous society, Fawcett spent his life trying to prove his Amazonian finds until his unexplained disappearance in 1925. Containing one of the most beautiful scenes of the year, this undseen gem deserves, nay, demands your attention.
