About Ruth Fisher

What is your fondest memory on air?

Interviewing Gregory Porter for his first ever UK interview who was actually in a restaurant in New York with his then-future wife!

What is your most memorable jazz gig?

Orphy Robinson’s Allstars Presents Bobby Hutcherson's Songbook at Church of Sound.

What is your favourite jazz story?

The very first time I got to interview Al Jarreau after a gig he had done in Tel Aviv port…and, of course, I couldn’t get the recorder to work so Al instructed his assistant to find one for me. We did the interview and he ended by singing L is For Lover for my young niece Claudia as that was (and still is) her favourite song of his!

If you were to choose the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ at the Jazz FM Awards, who would you give it to and why?

Dave Holland. He comes from humble beginnings in Wolverhampton, is self-taught and has been one of the top bassists in the world for 5 decades. He’s performed with Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and all the major names on the scene and is continually doing new and interesting projects.

What is the album that introduced you to jazz?

George Shearing Quintet with Nancy Wilson - The Swinging’s Mutual
