About Sarah Ward

What is your most memorable on-air moment?

It has to be when I was interviewing the great South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela burst into song whilst reminiscing.

What are your three top jazz albums of all time?

Art Blakey and the Jazz Messenger's Three Blind Mice, Charles Mingus's Blues and Roots and then Native Dancer by Wayne Shorter with Milton Nascimento.

What is your favourite jazz story?

My saxophonist partner and I visited Ronnie Scott's aged 17... the great Charles Mingus there and Ken was left in awe after briefly meeting him. Later in the evening, Mingus spotted Ken smoking a pipe later on and asked him to swap tobacco. The ice was broken after this and they chewed stories, mostly about Eric Dolphy.

If you were to choose the 'Lifetime Achievement Award' at the Jazz Fm Awards, who would give it to?

Norma Winstone. This is because of her musical life of changes, her elegant lyrics and the most beautiful voice. She's an inspiration.
