Metallica's Robert Trujillo to make his vocal debut on '72 Seasons'
He's 'proud' of his contribution
Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo has confirmed he’s singing on a track on Metallica’s new studio album ‘72 Seasons.’
Although Trujillo has been singing backing vocals at Metallica concerts over the past two decades – and occasionally lead vocals during the Doodle segment of live shows – he’s previously never lent his vocals to a studio recording.
In a new interview with Metallica's So What?!, Robert Trujillo has confirmed he sings on a ‘72 Seasons’ track called ‘You Must Burn!’.
He said: “When I joined Metallica, I’d never sung in my whole life, so the fact that I can now support a backup vocal is pretty cool. For the first time in my life, I get to sing on a Metallica record and support James (Hetfield). I’m very proud of that.”
Returning to his vocal debut later in the chat, Trujillo added: “It’s the first time that James and Greg (Fidelman, Metallica producer) had probably ever really trusted me with that position on a recording of this stature.
“I was surprised when I got the call from Greg because I was coming up to play a little bass, but then he said, ‘I’m going to have you sing on a couple things, too.’ And I was like, ‘Really?’ I got a little nervous. At the same time, I was very motivated.
“Fortunately for me, the part really does suit my comfort zone, so to speak. The vibe and the interesting – I don’t know, I wouldn’t say the ‘quality’ in what I had to offer – but the part lends itself to my personality, to my voice, and it sits and slots in really well with the moment and bass breakdown.
“So, it’s cool that it’s this breakdown that James and I were able to jam on and create, and then I get to sing on it too!”
Featuring the singles ‘If Darkness Had a Son’, 'Screaming Suicide' and ‘Lux Æterna', Metallica’s new studio album ’72 Seasons’ that lands on Friday 14th April 2023 via the band’s Blackened Recordings imprint.
Supporting the album’s release, Metallica are embarking on their M72 world tour across Europe and North America this year and into 2024.
Including two headline sets at Download Festival, Metallica play two nights at every location with each No Repeat Weekend featuring two completely different setlists and support line-ups.
The tour will feature a bold new in-the-round stage design that relocates the famed Metallica Snake Pit to centre stage.
