A 24-year-old man is in hospital with serious injuries following a three-car crash near Wooler.

A total of five people needed treatment following the smash, which left all vehicles "considerably damaged".

Emergency services raced to the scene on the A697 in Northumberland after the alarm was raised around 11.45am yesterday (Friday).

Fire crews from Berwick, Alnwick and Coldstream attended the incident, along with an air ambulance.

The seriously injured man, who was driving one of the vehicles, remains in hospital today, where he is said to be in a stable condition.

Two other casualties were also taken to hospital, while two more were treated and discharged at the scene.

The road was closed both ways - between the Jet Petrol Station at Haugh Head and The Riverside Leisure Park in Wooler - for a number of hours while the wreckage was cleared.

Police have launched an investigation and are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

“We have spoken to a number of people so far, but we are keen to talk to anyone else who may have information or dashcam footage from the area.

“If you can help, please get in touch.”
